Part 3: The Uplifting Playlist

TODO:

  •  Make a playlist of only songs that uplift you and makes you want to sing and dance

After waking up in a good mood, it’s only fitting to keep this energy up as you go through your daily morning routine.

I created a playlist on my phone called “Uplift,” and only included upbeat songs that pump me up and want to dance and sing. I do a lot of that in the bathroom: while brushing my teeth, showering/toweling off etc. I probably sing “I Believe I Can Fly” at least once a day.

It’s not the best rendition, but watch out karaoke bars, one day I’ll dominate! This routine has become so ingrained in how I live my life that my roommate knows that something must be off with me if he doesn’t hear me singing and blasting music from the bathroom :p.

I’ve found that having instant access to these select songs is very useful in making formerly dreaded moments in life better. For example, I have transformed bumper-to-bumper traffic into a slow-moving dance party. It’s amazing how a simple shift of emotion and perspective can create a more enjoyable experience… and we all have the choice to do that. I often make eye contact with the surrounding drivers. I notice their tension and frustration in their “This traffic is UNBELIEVABLE!!!” facial and bodily expressions. They notice my smile and how much I’m having fun. More often than not they smile back (or are secretly laughing at me…), but either way, being happy and having fun can be contagious.

Don’t be this guy.

My goal with continuously associating these positive feelings with this playlist is to develop an almost Pavlovian response to the music. I want to be able to use the playlist as a tool to snap me back to my preferred feeling state whenever I find myself overcome with fear or anxiety. So far so good.

A few songs on my playlist:

  1. “I believe I Can Fly” – R. Kelly
  2. “The World’s Greatest” – R. Kelly
  3. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” – Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
  4. “Till I Collapse” – Eminem (for when I’m pissed)
  5. “Fancy” – Drake (cuz ya’ fancy huh?)
  6. “Edelweiss” – Sound of Music (for sentimental reasons)
  7. “I Want You Back” – Jackson 5
  8. “Billie Jean” – MJ
